We are currently in a very festive time of year, one when we can spend time with family, enjoy the company of friends, and luxuriate in super-special blowout sales that fuel the international economy. The NBA gets involved, too, largely through their Christmas games but also by forcing their employees to sing holiday songs as a gift to their fans.
On Thursday, two Texas teams, the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks, released videos of their players singing holiday songs. The first, which you can watch above, finds some of our favorite Rockets singing the Chanukah classic "I Have a Little Dreidel." After the jump, check out the Mavericks trying their hand at the Christmas standard "Sleight Ride," plus my impartial analysis of the relative merits of each performance.
Let's get this out of the way right now: I am Jewish and in the midst of Chanukah-fueled joy (i.e. enjoying my eight nights of new socks), so I am naturally inclined to prefer the Rockets' song. On top of that, I'm a sucker for people trying to sing songs they may have never heard before in their lives. The Rockets tick off all these boxes and more.
The Mavericks, on the other hand, really get into things. In particular, head coach Rick Carlisle displays a commitment to looking foolish that would make his doppelgänger Jim Carrey proud. If you're not a cynic, this is the Texan-basketball-team-singing-a-holiday-song video for you. Oh, and Chris Kaman wears a bow at the top of his jersey so that he looks like a present and/or five-year-old girl.
Of course, we have not yet heard from the San Antonio Spurs, the third NBA team in the state. This Kwanzaa song is there for the taking, Coach Popovich.
