Very long ago, in April, the NBA world was turned upside-down by the unfortunate incident in which Los Angeles Lakers forward Metta World Peace elbowed Oklahoma City Thunder guard and Sixth Man of the Year James Harden in the head. MWP was suspended for seven games, including the first six games of the Lakers' seven-game first-round series against the Denver Nuggets. In the next round, they faced the Thunder, though World Peace and Harden only engaged in comparatively minor physical battles. After OKC dispatched LA in five games, the story seemed finished.
Yet, during the Thunder's 91-85 loss to the Miami Heat in Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Sunday, World Peace had some choice words for Harden. With the Thunder down three points at 12 seconds on the shot clock and 16 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Harden was called for a blocking foul for getting in LeBron James's way roughly 30 feet from the basket. World Peace immediately tweeted "No brain All beard," referring to both the dumb play and Harden's famous facial hair. Given the players' history, MWP didn't handle this situation particularly well. However, as he usually does, he followed up his criticism of Harden by praising his skill, tweeting "Harden will hit a big shot right now Watch out" only three minutes later. In true World Peace fashion, he acted like a jerk and showed that he's capable of being very positive. That kind of inconsistency can be a sign of deeper problems, but it's also a reminder that MWP is much more complicated than many make him out to be. He can act like a league pariah and a worthy winner of the league's citizenship award, all within a few minutes of each other.
