Having the same name as a celebrity is tough. No matter how cool the normal person is, the acquaintances of a "Will Smith" will always want to call him "Fresh Prince," and anyone named "Charlie Sheen" is pretty much guaranteed to have "Winning!" shouted at them for the next decade. Such is life — sometimes external forces turn the dullest aspects of daily life into pains in the rear.
ESPN has now turned this set of circumstances into a new commercial as part of their "It's Not Crazy, It's Sports" campaign. Throughout the 30-second spot, a bald middle-aged white man named "Michael Jordan" lives his life around town, only to find that everyone he encounters — restaurant hosts, drivers, hotel concierges, etc. — gets disappointed once it's clear that he's not the best basketball player ever. One must wonder if the actor Michael B. Jordan, best known from "The Wire" and "Friday Night Lights," has ever had to deal with the same shame.
It's a great ad, but also a little sad when you consider the plight of guys with this name. On the other hand, I bet it helps them make those restaurant reservations in the first place. You win some, you lose some.
