Every mascot has a real-world inspiration or backstory, but few actually follow it. The Phoenix Suns' Gorilla doesn't swing from trees, the Utah Jazz's Bear doesn't steal pic-a-nic baskets, and the Miami Heat's anthropomorphic ember Burnie doesn't peter out and become soot (though I wish it would). Mascots are there to entertain fans and be fun. They are not playing characters so much as conforming to an established role.
Kudos, then, to Donny the Dog of Maccabi Tel Aviv for doing what real dogs do. On Saturday, during its game against Bnei HaSharon, a cat managed to find its way onto the court. Donny, who is clearly a true artist, sprang into action and chased the feline across the arena, and into a corner. He wasn't successful, but the in-character effort opened up a new space for mascot antics. It's not just about dunking off trampolines or doing funny dances anymore.
Remember this when the Spurs Coyote maims the Pacers' dog mascot Bowser the next time these teams meet.
